Introduction

Black Myth: Wukong is an action RPG developed by Game Science that draws deeply from the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. You play as the Destined One, a monkey warrior embarking on a perilous journey through breathtakingly beautiful yet brutally hostile lands. The game's combat system blends fast-paced melee combos, powerful spells, and transformable spirit abilities that give you incredible flexibility in how you approach each encounter.

Unlike traditional Soulslike games, Black Myth: Wukong emphasizes aggressive play. Your light attack combos build focus points that fuel heavy attacks, while your mana bar governs spell usage. The game features over 80 unique bosses spread across six chapters, each with distinct move sets, phases, and weaknesses. Many of these bosses are completely optional and tied to secret areas that are easy to miss on a first playthrough.

This comprehensive boss guide covers every major encounter in the game, provides proven tactics for even the toughest fights, explains how to access all secret areas, and lays out the step-by-step path to unlocking the true ending. Whether you are stuck on Tiger Vanguard or hunting every last secret boss, this guide has you covered.

Chapter 1-2 Bosses

Black Wind King (Chapter 1, Mandatory): The first real skill check in the game. Black Wind King has two phases. In phase one, he uses sweeping claw attacks and a lunging grab. Stay close and circle to his right — most of his swipes will miss. In phase two (around 60% HP), he summons a dark tornado that tracks you. Sprint perpendicular to its path and use Rock Solid to absorb hits. Tip: Equip the Wandering Wight spirit you can find before this fight — its slam attack deals massive stagger damage.

Wandering Wight (Chapter 1, Optional): This towering optional boss is found just before the entrance to the Black Wind Cave. He hits like a truck and has a terrifying AoE ground slam. The key is patience: bait his slow overhead smash, dodge through it, and land 2-3 light attacks before backing off. Do not get greedy — his fast swing follow-up can catch you mid-combo. He drops the Wandering Wight spirit, one of the best early-game transformations.

Guangzhi (Chapter 1, Optional): A wolf captain guarding a bridge near the start of the chapter. Guangzhi is fast and aggressive but has low poise, meaning you can stagger him with heavy attacks. Use Pillar Stance charged heavies to knock him down repeatedly. Defeating him rewards the Guangzhi transformation, which gives you a fire-imbued weapon that applies burn buildup.

Tiger Vanguard (Chapter 2, Mandatory): Widely considered the first major wall of the game. Tiger Vanguard is relentless — he chains combos that can delete 80% of your HP bar. His tell for the big damage combo is a low growl followed by three rapid slashes and a lunging thrust. Parry the third slash with Rock Solid and punish the recovery. When he jumps into the air, sprint sideways immediately — the AoE landing covers a massive radius. Recommend: Be at least level 30 with the Red Tides transformation unlocked before attempting this fight.

Stone Vanguard (Chapter 2, Optional): A massive stone guardian hidden in a side path off the Crouching Tiger Temple. He is slow but hits devastatingly hard. His most dangerous move is a charging shoulder tackle that has near-instant tracking. The trick is to stay mid-range and bait the tackle, dodge sideways, then punish his lengthy recovery animation. Use thrust stance charged heavies for safe poking damage.

Chapter 3-4 Bosses

Yellowbrow (Chapter 3, Mandatory): The leader of the New Thunder Temple, Yellowbrow is a frustratingly mobile caster-type boss. He teleports constantly, summons lightning strikes from above, and has a shield that must be broken with heavy attacks before he takes meaningful damage. Use Cloud Step to close distance when he teleports away. His phase two transforms him into a giant golden Buddha — during this phase, focus entirely on dodging the sweeping laser attack and wait for the brief opening after his ground slam. Pillar Stance charged heavies are excellent for hitting his elevated weak point.

Yellow Wind Sage (Chapter 3, Mandatory): This boss is infamous for the blinding sandstorm mechanic. The sand reduces visibility to near-zero and applies a DoT that shreds through your health. There is a crucial item — the Wind Tamer — found in a secret area of Chapter 2 that completely negates the sandstorm. If you missed it, the fight is exponentially harder. With the Wind Tamer equipped, the fight becomes manageable: dodge his claw swipes, punish his triple spin attack, and use Immobilize during his charge-up animation for free damage windows.

Hundred-Eyed Daoist Master (Chapter 4, Mandatory): The penultimate boss of Chapter 4 is a horrifying centipede-human hybrid fought in the Webbed Hollow. This boss has massive AoE poison attacks and a grab that deals instant kill-level damage. The fight heavily rewards aerial play — use Pillar Stance heavy attacks to stay above the poison pools. His weak spot is the cluster of eyes on his torso; focused attacks there cause a stagger. Essential tip: Equip the poison resistance gear from the Webbed Hollow merchant before this fight. Without it, the poison DoT will force you to burn through your healing gourd charges before phase two.

Duskveil (Chapter 4, Optional but Recommended): A massive bird-like celestial beast guarding a treasure in the Webbed Hollow secret area. Duskveil has two distinct phases. Phase one is a ground fight where he uses sweeping wing attacks and a pecking charge. Break one of his legs to trigger a long stagger. Phase two has him take to the air, raining feather projectiles and diving attacks. Use Cloud Step to avoid the feather storm and Immobilize when he lands to punish. He drops a key item for unlocking the true ending.

Kang-Jin Loong (Chapter 4, Optional): A lightning dragon boss fought in an open arena near the end of Chapter 4. This is one of the most cinematic fights in the game. She alternates between ground-based claw attacks and aerial lightning breath. When she takes to the air, use the Pluck of Many spell — your clones will continue attacking her while you focus on dodging the lightning strikes. The fight rewards high mobility; the Ring of Fire transformation is excellent here for its fast dodge and burn damage.

Chapter 5-6 Bosses

Red Boy (Chapter 5, Mandatory): The young fiery demon lord is a test of endurance. The entire arena is periodically engulfed in flames, forcing you to manage positioning carefully. Red Boy chains rapid fireball barrages with close-range claw combos. Use the Rat Governor spirit for its fire resistance buff. When he summons the giant fire pillars that rotate around the arena, sprint to the very edge and wait for the pattern to pass. His phase two replaces his claws with a flaming spear that extends his reach significantly — stay extra close to avoid the spear's wide sweeps.

Yaksha King (Chapter 5, Mandatory): The final boss of Chapter 5 and arguably the most aggressive humanoid boss in the game. Yaksha King has zero downtime between combos. He uses a six-hit sword combo that ends with a ground slam, a ranged energy wave, and a teleporting thrust attack. The critical survival tactic here is to never panic-dodge — each of his combos has a consistent rhythm. Count the hits: the six-hit combo has a noticeable pause after the fourth hit before the fifth and sixth come out. That pause is a trap to make you dodge early. Wait for the sixth hit, dodge, and counter with a single heavy attack. Rinse and repeat. This is a marathon, not a sprint.

Erlang Shen, the Sacred Divinity (Chapter 6, Secret Boss): The true final boss of Black Myth: Wukong and the hardest fight in the entire game. Erlang Shen is found in a completely optional secret area called the Grand Void, accessible only after defeating all six secret area bosses. He has four phases and a move pool of over 20 distinct attacks. His third eye fires a beam that inflicts instant petrification — you must break line of sight by dodging behind one of the pillars in the arena. Phase three introduces his divine wolf companion, which attacks independently while Erlang Shen continues his pressure. Save your full focus charges for phase four, where he gains a healing negation aura — you must burst him down before your healing gourd runs dry. Recommended loadout: Full Bull King armor set for damage reduction, maxed Immobilize and Rock Solid spells, the Dark Thunder spirit, and the Jingubang weapon from the Chapter 6 secret area.

The Broken Shell (Chapter 6, True Final Boss): After defeating Erlang Shen, return to the Great Pagoda and interact with the broken shell of Sun Wukong. This triggers the true final boss — a corrupted, shadowy version of the Monkey King himself. The Broken Shell mirrors your own moveset: he dodges, uses Cloud Step, and even uses Immobilize against you. The single most important thing in this fight is spirit management — the Broken Shell's Immobilize lasts twice as long as yours, and if you have no spirit charges left to break free, you will eat a full combo. Always save at least one spirit charge for the Immobilize escape. This fight is equal parts skill check and knowledge check — learn his patterns, respect his damage, and you will earn the true ending.

Secret Areas & Missable Content

Black Myth: Wukong is packed with missable content. Each of the six chapters contains a secret area with unique bosses, powerful rewards, and lore-critical encounters. Missing these areas locks you out of the true ending.

Chapter 1 — Ancient Guanyin Temple: After defeating Black Wind King, return to the pool of water near the beginning of the chapter. Dive into the underwater passage at the far end to reach the Ancient Guanyin Temple. The boss here is the Elder Jinchi, a massive undead monk. Defeating him rewards the Fireproof Mantle, a vessel that grants immunity to fire damage — essential for Chapter 5.

Chapter 2 — Kingdom of Womankind (secret area): In the Crouching Tiger Temple, look for a breakable wall near the meditation spot. Behind it is a long tunnel leading to the Kingdom of Womankind. The area boss is the Rat Emperor, a giant rodent with poison attacks. Victory grants the Wind Tamer vessel, which neutralizes the Yellow Wind Sage's sandstorm and makes that boss fight manageable.

Chapter 3 — The New Thunder Temple Depths: After the Yellowbrow fight, do not leave the temple. Instead, drop down into the pit behind the throne to access the temple depths. The boss here is the Electrocuted Elder, a corrupted thunder spirit. He drops the Thunder Talisman, a crucial crafting component for the Jingubang weapon.

Chapter 4 — The Webbed Hollow Depths: After defeating the Hundred-Eyed Daoist Master, use the Webbed Silk Key (found in a side room with the caged scholar) to unlock the iron gate near the shrine. This leads to the Webbed Hollow Depths where you face the Maternal Spider, an enormous spider queen. Defeating her unlocks the Weaver's Needle, a vessel that massively boosts damage against celestial-type enemies.

Chapter 5 — The Burning Mountain: Before entering the final arena, take the left fork in the lava fields to find a hidden path to the Burning Mountain. The boss is Flaming General, a fire golem that requires the Fireproof Mantle to fight comfortably. He drops the Flame Core, needed for the final Jingubang upgrade.

Chapter 6 — The Grand Void: This area only unlocks after defeating all five previous secret area bosses and collecting their key items. The Grand Void is an ethereal realm accessible from the summit of the Mountain of Fruit and Flowers. It contains the game's hardest secret boss, the four-phase Erlang Shen, the Sacred Divinity, as well as the Jingubang weapon — the best staff in the game.

Treasure Hunter Quest Line: Scattered across Chapters 3-5 are four treasure hunter NPCs who give you maps to buried treasure. The first is in the New Thunder Temple (Chapter 3), the second in the Webbed Hollow (Chapter 4), and the last two in the Burning Mountain (Chapter 5). Completing all four maps rewards the "Fortune Favors the Bold" achievement and a unique curio that increases item discovery by 30%. These quests are time-sensitive — if you advance the story past certain thresholds, the NPCs disappear permanently, so complete them as soon as you find each map.

Best Builds

The Spellblade Build (Best All-Rounder):

  • Spells: Immobilize (max), Rock Solid (max), Cloud Step (max), Pluck of Many (max)
  • Stats Priority: Mana > Stamina > Health > Attack
  • Stance: Smash Stance (best damage-to-spirit cost ratio)
  • Spirit: Wandering Wight (early), Rat Governor (mid), Dark Thunder (late)
  • Transformation: Red Tides (general combat), Yellow Loong (single-target burst)
  • Armor: Bull King set (best defensive stats for general use)
  • Curios: Celestial Jade Tablets (+max mana), Tiger Relic (+stamina regen)

This build gives you maximum versatility. Immobilize is your opening tool, Cloud Step is your emergency escape, Rock Solid lets you parry through boss combos, and Pluck of Many is your ultimate burst damage button. Ideal for first playthroughs where you need adaptability.

The Glass Cannon Build (Speedrun / NG+):

  • Spells: Ring of Fire (max), Pluck of Many (max), Immobilize (1 point only), A Pluck of Many variant
  • Stats Priority: Attack > Crit Chance > Crit Damage > Mana
  • Stance: Thrust Stance (max range, safest poke damage)
  • Spirit: Tiger Vanguard (+50% attack for 15 seconds)
  • Transformation: Ebon Flow (ranged spellcasting transformation)
  • Armor: Wukong armor set (from Chapter 6 secret area)
  • Weapon: Jingubang (highest base damage in the game)

This build sacrifices all defense for maximum burst damage. The goal is to kill bosses before they can kill you. Activate Ring of Fire, pop Tiger Vanguard spirit for the damage buff, summon clones with Pluck of Many, and unleash charged Thrust Stance heavies. Most bosses will phase or die within 10 seconds of this rotation. Extremely risky but extremely rewarding in NG+ where you know boss patterns.

The Tank Build (First Playthrough / Hard Bosses):

  • Spells: Rock Solid (max), Immobilize (max), Cloud Step (max), Ring of Fire (1 point for regen)
  • Stats Priority: Health > Defense > Mana > Stamina
  • Stance: Pillar Stance (safe aerial attacks)
  • Spirit: Wandering Wight (damage reduction buff)
  • Transformation: Rat Governor (bonus defense, taunt enemies)
  • Armor: Bull King full set with defense-enhancing curios
  • Gourd: Jade Lotus Gourd (largest healing capacity)

When you hit a wall boss like Tiger Vanguard or Yaksha King, switch to this build. Pillar Stance lets you deal damage from relative safety, Rock Solid gives you multiple parry opportunities per fight, and the Bull King set's damage reduction means even a missed dodge won't one-shot you. This build won't win speed records, but it will get you through the hardest fights on your first try.

True Ending Guide

Black Myth: Wukong has two endings: the standard ending and the true ending. To unlock the true ending, you must complete a series of tasks across all six chapters before facing the final boss. Here is the complete checklist.

Step 1 — Defeat All Secret Area Bosses:

  • Elder Jinchi (Chapter 1 — Ancient Guanyin Temple)
  • Rat Emperor (Chapter 2 — Kingdom of Womankind)
  • Electrocuted Elder (Chapter 3 — New Thunder Temple Depths)
  • Maternal Spider (Chapter 4 — Webbed Hollow Depths)
  • Flaming General (Chapter 5 — Burning Mountain)

Step 2 — Collect the Five Vessels: Each secret area boss drops a unique vessel that is essential for the true ending. The vessels are: Fireproof Mantle, Wind Tamer, Thunder Talisman, Weaver's Needle, and Flame Core. Do not sell or discard any of these items — you need all five in your inventory for the final sequence.

Step 3 — Access the Grand Void (Chapter 6): Once you have all five vessels, return to the Mountain of Fruit and Flowers in Chapter 6. At the summit, a previously inactive celestial gate will now be open. This gate leads to the Grand Void, where Erlang Shen awaits. This area also contains the Jingubang weapon — pick it up before engaging Erlang Shen.

Step 4 — Defeat Erlang Shen, the Sacred Divinity: This is the hardest boss in the game (see the Chapter 6 boss section above for detailed tactics). Defeating Erlang Shen rewards the final vessel — the Divine Eye, which purifies the corruption from Sun Wukong's broken shell.

Step 5 — Defeat the Broken Shell: With the Divine Eye in your inventory, return to the Great Pagoda one final time. Interact with the broken shell of Sun Wukong. The purification from the Divine Eye triggers a unique phase transition in the Broken Shell fight, revealing the boss's true form and unlocking the game's actual final sequence.

Step 6 — Watch the True Ending Cutscene: After defeating the purified Broken Shell, a unique cutscene plays that shows the Destined One donning the full Wukong armor and wielding the Jingubang, fully inheriting Sun Wukong's legacy. The screen fades to black with the message "The Journey Continues..." — a direct hint at the post-credits scene that sets up the DLC or sequel.

Pro Tip: Do not start New Game+ until you have verified you have all five vessels and the Divine Eye in your inventory. The true ending requirements are checked at the moment you interact with the Broken Shell. If you miss even one vessel, you get the standard ending and cannot redo it in that playthrough without starting NG+ and collecting everything again. Double-check your inventory before approaching the final fight.
