Introduction

Dragon's Dogma 2 features 10 vocations (classes), each with unique mechanics, weapon types, and playstyles. Unlike traditional RPGs, you and your main pawn can both choose any vocation, and you can switch freely at any vocation guild. This guide covers every vocation, ranks their endgame viability, and recommends the best pawn synergies for each.

Fighter — Beginner Tank

Weapon: Sword + Shield | Difficulty: Easy | Best For: New players, main tank role

The Fighter is the most straightforward vocation. Your job is to hold aggro, block attacks, and create openings for your pawns. The shield parry mechanic is generous — press block just before an attack connects to trigger a perfect parry that staggers most enemies.

Essential Core Skills:

  • Shield Bash (200 DCP): Interrupts enemy attacks. Your primary tool for controlling dangerous enemies.
  • Heavenward Slash (350 DCP): Launches enemies into the air. Sets up aerial combos for your pawns.
  • Shield Summon (500 DCP): Taunts all enemies within 15 meters. Essential for protecting squishy pawns.

Augments: Bastion (+15% defense) and Endurance (+20% stamina regen). These are useful on any vocation — unlock Fighter early just for these augments.

Mage — Support Caster

Weapon: Archistaff | Difficulty: Easy | Best For: Healing, buff support

The Mage is the only reliable healing class in the early game. Your Anodyne spell creates a heal-over-time zone that restores 30% HP over 10 seconds. Later, Halidom cures poison, silence, and blindness — status effects that can end runs.

Essential Core Skills:

  • Anodyne (150 DCP): Healing circle. Always keep this equipped.
  • Fire Boon (100 DCP): Enchants your party's weapons with fire. Exploits enemy elemental weaknesses.
  • Levin (300 DCP): Lightning strike. The only Mage damage spell worth using — guaranteed stun on most enemies.

Pawn Note: A Mage pawn with Utilitarian inclination will automatically heal at optimal times. This is the best inclination for support pawns.

Thief — Burst DPS

Weapon: Daggers | Difficulty: Hard | Best For: Single-target damage, stagger locking

The Thief has the highest single-target DPS in the game. Your skill "Masterful Kill" is a counter move that deals 5× damage when timed correctly. Learning enemy attack patterns is essential — a well-played Thief kills bosses before they can act.

Essential Core Skills:

  • Masterful Kill (400 DCP): Counterattack skill. Grants invincibility frames during the counter window. Practice this until it's muscle memory.
  • Helm Splitter (300 DCP): Jump attack that hits multiple times. Use after climbing a large enemy.
  • Plunder (250 DCP): Steals items from enemies. High chance to get rare crafting materials.

Archer — Ranged Damage

Weapon: Bow | Difficulty: Medium | Best For: Safe damage, flying enemies

The Archer excels at consistent damage from a distance. Unlike the Sorcerer, you don't need to stand still and channel — you can move and shoot. Your "Deathly Arrow" skill penetrates through multiple enemies, making it excellent for crowd control.

Essential Core Skills:

  • Deathly Arrow (350 DCP): Piercing shot. Hits all enemies in a line. Excellent for packed groups.
  • Explosive Arrow (250 DCP): Attaches a bomb to the target. Detonates after 3 seconds. Use on large enemies for massive damage.
  • Catapult (200 DCP): Rapid-fire volley. Best DPS skill against single targets.

Warrior — Heavy Hitter

Weapon: Greatsword | Difficulty: Medium | Best For: Crowd control, stagger

The Warrior trades defense for raw damage. Your charged heavy attacks can break enemy guard and stagger even large foes. The "Barge" skill lets you charge through enemies while taking reduced damage — your only mobility tool.

Sorcerer — Nuke Mage

Weapon: Archistaff | Difficulty: Hard | Best For: Area damage, elemental coverage

The Sorcerer channels powerful spells that decimate groups. "Maelstrom" creates a tornado that lasts 15 seconds and deals continuous damage. "Meteoron" rains fire on a large area. The downside: you must stand still while casting, and most spells take 5+ seconds to channel.

Maister Classes (Advanced Vocations)

Warrior Maister: Unlocked by completing "The Stalwart" quest in Battahl. Your charge attacks gain hyper armor and deal +50% damage. Transform from a walking tank into an unstoppable force.

Sorcerer Maister: Unlocked by collecting 10 "Wyrmstone" fragments from drakes. Halves casting time for all spells. Makes the Sorcerer viable for boss fights.

Thief Maister: Unlocked by stealing 50 rare items. "Masterful Kill" now triggers twice when successful. Doubles your burst potential.

Archer Maister: Unlocked by completing all target practice challenges. All arrows gain piercing properties. No more wasted shots on grouped enemies.

Pawn Synergy Guide

Your main pawn should complement your vocation. Here are the best combinations:

  • Fighter + Mage Pawn: Classic tank-healer combo. You hold aggro, your pawn keeps you alive. Works for all content.
  • Thief + Fighter Pawn: You deal damage, your pawn draws aggro. High risk, high reward.
  • Sorcerer + Fighter + Mage Pawns: You nuke, your pawns protect you. Requires good positioning.
  • Archer + Thief Pawns: Three-way DPS. Kill everything before it reaches you. Fragile but fast.
Final Tip: Don't neglect augments from other vocations. Unlock Fighter to level 5 for Bastion, then switch to your preferred class. A level 5 Fighter augment on a level 50 Sorcerer provides the same defense boost — cross-class augments are essential for min-maxing.
