I spent my first Stardew Valley spring planting a mix of everything because I thought variety was smart. By Summer I had 200g to my name, no upgraded tools, and a farm that looked like a disaster zone. Meanwhile my friend who started at the same time had a coop, 20 blueberry plants, and 15,000g in the bank. I was playing farm simulator while he was building an empire.

Here's what I learned after restarting and actually doing Year 1 right.

Spring — I Planted Parsnips Like A Fool

I planted 50 parsnips on day 1 because that's what the game tells you to do. Parsnips sell for 35g each. After a full season I had maybe 2,000g. Meanwhile, the correct move was to save my money for the Egg Festival on Day 13 and buy Strawberries. At 100g per seed, each Strawberry plant produces multiple harvests across Spring and earns you 300g+ per plant. Plant 20 Strawberries and you make 6,000g in the second half of the season alone.

What I actually do now: Plant the initial parsnips (you need them for the Community Center anyway). Fish for gold — fishing near the mountain lake is the best early-game money maker. Save every penny for the Egg Festival. Buy 20+ Strawberry seeds. Plant them on Day 13. Water them every day. Watch the money roll in.

One more thing: Don't buy the backpack upgrade on Day 3 like I did. Wait until you have 3,000g to spare, which should be around Day 8-10 if you've been fishing. The backpack is important, but Strawberry seeds are more important.

Summer — I Planted Wheat. Why Did I Plant Wheat.

Wheat takes 4 days to grow and sells for 25g. Blueberries take 13 days to grow and produce 3 berries per harvest at 20g each, with multiple harvests across Summer. Do the math. I planted 30 wheat my first Summer and made basically nothing. My friend planted 50 Blueberries on Day 1 and earned 25,000g over the season.

Summer priority list: Day 1 — plant 50+ Blueberries. Reach floor 80 in the Mines (you need gold ore for Quality Sprinklers). Upgrade your pickaxe to copper then steel. Build a furnace. By Summer 28 you should have at least 8 Quality Sprinklers crafted — they water 8 tiles each and will save you 20+ minutes per day in Fall.

Don't forget the Luau (Day 11): I showed up with a parsnip and the governor hated it. Bring a high-quality item — a gold-star melon or a fish from the mountain lake. The best response gives you friendship with everyone in town.

Fall — Cranberries Are the Only Answer

I planted corn my first Fall because I thought "multiple harvests" was always good. Corn takes 14 days to grow and sells for 50g. Cranberries take 7 days and produce 2-3 berries per harvest at 75g each. A single Cranberry plant earns 1,000g+ over Fall. Plant 60 Cranberries on Day 1 of Fall and you'll never worry about money again.

Also do this: Build a Silo before you clear your grass — cut grass turns into hay automatically. Build a Coop and Barn. Buy 2 chickens and 1 cow. Animal products are a steady income stream that requires zero effort once you have auto-feeders.

Winter — I Sat Around Doing Nothing. Huge Mistake.

My first Winter, I thought "no crops = vacation." I spent 28 days walking around Pelican Town wasting time. Winter is actually the most important season in Year 1 because you can't grow anything outside — all your time goes into progress.

What to actually do: Reach floor 120 in the Mines. Unlock the Skull Key. Bring food and bombs for the lower levels. Give gifts to villagers — Coffee is a universal "like" and easy to mass-produce once you have a coffee maker. Plan your Year 2 farm layout — move buildings, add paths, place sprinklers where crops will go. Forage Winter Root and Crystal Fruit (Crystal Fruit sells for 150g each base).

Pro tip I wish I knew: Complete the Pantry bundle in the Community Center as fast as possible. The reward is the Greenhouse, which lets you grow crops year-round. I didn't finish it until Year 2 Winter and wasted an entire year of potential profits.

Other Dumb Things I Did So You Don't Have To

I married the first person who was nice to me. Rushed Leah because she liked salads. Turned out she's great, but I didn't check anyone else's heart events. Take your time — every spouse has unique perks and dialogues.

I donated my first Prismatic Shard to the museum. The game doesn't tell you that Prismatic Shards are the rarest item in the game and you need one for the Galaxy Sword (best weapon in the game). I gave mine to Gunther for a "reward" of 3,000g and a cutscene. Donate your second one, not your first.

I never used the TV. The Queen of Sauce on Sundays and Wednesdays teaches you cooking recipes. Some recipes are needed for the Community Center. I missed an entire year of recipes because I didn't watch TV.

I ignored the Secret Woods. Hidden behind a large log in the forest (needs Steel Axe). Contains hardwood, which you need for your farm buildings. I was buying hardwood from Robin like an idiot when there was a free source 30 seconds from my farm.

Stardew Valley is a game about efficiency disguised as a relaxing farming sim. You can play however you want, but if you want to actually progress, you need to be intentional about your crops and your time. My second playthrough (the one where I planted Strawberries and Blueberries like a normal person) was infinitely more fun because I wasn't constantly broke.

Go ahead, plant nothing but parsnips for a full year. I dare you. You'll last about as long as I did — but at least now you know why.
