Welcome to Inaba — Your New Home Sucks (At First)
So you’ve booted up Persona 4 Golden and you’re staring at a foggy Japanese countryside. You’re a transfer student. Your family is weird. The local police are incompetent. And you’ve got a TV that eats people. Normal stuff. Look, I’ve got over 400 hours across three save files on Vita and PC. I’ve broken controllers, cried over social links, and I still think the fishing mini-game is poorly explained garbage. But I love this game like a sibling I want to strangle. This guide is me sitting you down, handing you a cup of tea, and telling you the real shit the tutorials skip.
Your first five hours are a visual novel with a gun to your head. Don’t freak out. Talk to everyone. Go to the library. Join the basketball team. But most importantly: save every single day you can. The game throws a “save or not?” screen at you for a reason. USE IT. If you skip a save before a story event and you get a game over, that’s on you, not me.
Also, the first 15 days are on rails. You cannot change anything. Just accept it. Use that time to read every book you find in the classroom or the bookstore. One specific book, “The Great Elephant”, raises your Understanding stat faster than anything else in the first month. Grab it from the school library on April 18th or you’ll be grinding random questions for hours.
Chapter 1: Yukiko’s Castle — The Rage Quit Zone
Alright. First real dungeon. Yukiko’s Castle. It’s a tutorial dungeon, but it’s also a killer. I lost two hours on my first run because I thought I could brute-force it. You can’t. The Avenger Knight shadows on floor 3 will one-shot your protagonist if he’s below level 7. No joke. Marakunda + physical attack = RIP. You need to either guard with your best tank or kill them before they act. Your starter Persona Izanagi is a wet noodle. Fuse him into Orochi the moment you hit level 8. Orochi learns Mazio and resists physical. That alone will save your run.
Here’s the tip that nobody tells you: hit every single treasure chest. Not for the money—for the Goho-M items. You can never have too many. In the Castle, there’s a hidden Mana Stone on floor 4. It’s in the southwest corner, behind a breakable wall. You need to talk to the fox in the shopping district and pay for healing once to get the quest. Doing that quest gives you a Skill Card of Tarunda, which you’ll need for the boss.
One more thing: the Fox Social Link for healing is worth more than any item. Drop 10,000 yen on it early. It heals your party for free later. No, really, FREE. Don’t skip the fox.
Chapter 2: The Steamy Bathhouse — Dodge or Die
Okay, you survived the Castle. Now you get a bathhouse full of Water Shadows that are weak to Electric and Wind. Most people run in with Chie and Yosuke. That’s fine, but you’ll hit a wall on floor 3 with the Mokoi and Arahabaki combos. Arahabaki repels physical. If you have Chie use Assault Dive, she’s hitting herself. I did that. Twice. I was furious. Bring Yukiko to burn the Mokoi instead. She learns Maragi at level 12. That’s your AoE clear.
The Bathhouse has a horrible mechanic: lack of safe rooms. You only get one at the entrance and one halfway up on floor 5. That means you’re walking back a lot. ALWAYS carry three Goho-M’s. I cannot stress this enough. I got stuck with no SP and no escape on floor 6 once, and I had to reload a save from four hours prior because I was too stubborn to carry more than one.
Hidden item: on floor 4, check the locker in the eastern shower room. There’s a Traesto Stone that works as an emergency escape. But the real prize is Power Incense on floor 6. It permanently raises a party member’s attack. Give it to Kanji when he joins. He’s your physical beast.
The boss is Shadow Kanji. He’s a punching bag until phase 2 when he pulls out Power Charge + Zionga. That hits your whole party for 80-100 HP. If Chie is underleveled, she dies in one hit. I learned that the hard way. You need Yukiko’s Media (learned at level 18) and you need it cast every other turn. Grind to level 17 before you fight him. It’s boring, but losing an hour is more boring.
Chapter 3: Marukyu Striptease — The Difficulty Spike
This is where the game stops holding your hand. Marukyu Striptease (yes, that’s the real name, the localization team had fun) is a factory full of Fire and Ice enemies. You’ll want a Persona that resists both. Take-Minakata (fuse from Hua Po + Orobas) laughs at fire and ice. He learns Mazionga too, which is your best friend.
The real pain point here is the Conveyor Belt puzzles. They waste your time. The solution is always: go right, step on the switch, go left, step on the switch. Memorize that pattern. There’s a secret floor on the conveyor belt after the third switch—jump off and you’ll find a chest with Divine Grace skill card for Yukiko. It doubles her healing. She becomes a monster cleric. DO NOT MISS THIS.
Also, Mitsuo’s math questions in the classroom. Pick the wrong answer and you lose Understanding points. The correct answers are: 8, 15, 41. Write that down.
The boss, Shadow Mitsuo, is a joke mechanically but a pain in the ass because he spams Marin Karin (charm) on your party. If your main character gets charmed, you lose control. The counter is Me Patra on Yukiko or a Persona with Resist Charm. I recommend Apsaras with a charm null skill card. Fuse her before the fight.
Chapter 4: Void Quest — Prepare for Bullshit
Void Quest is a cursed video game dungeon. It’s long, it’s tedious, and it has instant death traps on the floor. I’m not joking. Floor 3 has a chest that spawns a Deathbound shadow that casts Mudo. If your protagonist is weak to dark, you’re dead. Carry a Homunculus (sold at the Shiroku store) or fuse a Persona that nulls dark. Mothman (fuse from Power + Angel) is your savior here. He nulls dark and learns Zionga.
The dungeon has a slot machine mini-game that gives you items. The casino is a trap—it wastes time. The best item is the Empress Card that increases SP recovery. Get it, then leave. Do not gamble for hours like I did. I spent two real days trying to get the Orlov Diamond quest item. It’s not worth it.
The boss on Void Quest is Shadow Rise (or Kusumi no Okami). She uses Light spells that hit your whole party. Naoto is mandatory here if you have her. She learns Makougaru and resists light. If you don’t have Naoto, fuse Queen’s necklace into a Persona with Null Light. Otherwise, you’ll be praying to RNGesus every turn.
Phase two: she summons four Avenger Knights that heal her. Kill them in one turn with an AoE Mabufu or Mazio. If you leave them alive, she heals 500 HP a turn. That’s a softlock. I had to restart the boss fight three times because I didn’t bring enough AoE. Learn from my pain.
Boss Fights Guide — Patterns That Will Kill You
Every boss in P4G has a pattern. Here are the hard ones. No fluff.
- Shadow Yukiko (Castle): Phase 1: uses Agilao and Tarukaja. Use Tarunda on her immediately. Phase 2: starts spamming Maragion. Guard with everyone if you don’t have Rakukaja. She also summons a Prince that heals her. Kill the Prince with Zio. One shot. Done.
- Shadow Kanji (Bathhouse): Phase 1: easy. Just hit his weakness (reflects phys, so use magic). Phase 2: he uses Power Charge + Zionga. That’s a combo. If you see him Power Charge, guard with everyone. Do not attack. I watched a friend try to tank it at level 20 and he got wiped. Guard. Then heal.
- Shadow Mitsuo (Striptease): Phase 1: spams Marin Karin. Have Yukiko with Me Patra or use items. Phase 2: he summons Mokoi adds that cast Maragion. Use Bufu to knock them down and all-out attack. If you let them stack, the AoE damage will end you.
- Shadow Rise (Void Quest): Already covered, but repeat: kill her adds immediately. Naoto’s Makougaru is your best friend. If you don’t have her, use Megidola from a fused Persona.
- The Reaper: Yes, you can fight the Reaper in P4G. He guards chests after you open 21 chests. He’s level 85. Don’t fight him until you’re level 70+ and have Rakukaja + Matarukaja. He uses Mahamaon (instant kill) and Mamudoon. You need Homunculus for your protagonist or you die instantly. Honestly, skip him unless you’re going for the platinum. He’s not worth the stress.
One more thing: the final boss (Izanami) has a move called “Soul Drain” that steals all your SP. The counter is to keep SP Recovery items like Soul Drops on everyone. I went into that fight with no items and ended up hitting her with a wet noodle for 40 minutes. Don’t be me.
Secrets & Missable Crap You’ll Regret Missing
P4G is infamous for missable content. You have to be obsessive to get everything. Here’s the shortlist of stuff you’ll kick yourself for missing:
- The True Ending: On the final day (March 20th), when you’re at the gas station, you have to refuse to go home and then talk to everyone. If you go home, you get the bad ending. I missed the true ending on my first playthrough and got the credits with zero resolution. Worst feeling in gaming.
- Marie’s Social Link: You need to max her out before December 24th. She appears in the shopping district on rainy days. Miss it, and you lock out an entire dungeon and a boss. I missed her on my second run because I didn’t check the weather forecast. The game tells you the weather. USE IT.
- The Secret Boss (Margaret): After beating the game, you can fight Margaret in New Game+. She’s level 99 and uses all elements. You need a Maxed Social Link for every arcana. That means you need to plan your days perfectly. I used a spreadsheet. No shame.
- Orlov Diamond quest: In Void Quest, you find a quest for a diamond. It’s in a chest on floor 6 behind a locked door. The key is on floor 5. Bring a Treasure Key from the previous dungeon. If you miss it, you can’t get the Weapon for Kanji from the fox. Not world-ending, but annoying.
- The “Mysterious Letter” quest: On February 5th, check the shoe locker at school. There’s a letter that starts a social link with Yumi. If you don’t check, she’s gone forever. I missed it and she never showed up again. Sad.
Also, find the Beef Bowl quest on the first day of summer. It gives you a Skill Card for Almighty Boost. That’s the only way to get it before endgame. Buy the beef bowl from the restaurant and give it to the old man in the park. Easy, but missable.
FAQ — Stupid Questions You’re Afraid to Ask
Q: Do I need to max every Social Link?
A: Not for the story. For the true ending, you need Marie and Adachi (if you want his S-Link). The rest are optional but give you fusion bonuses. If you want the best Personas, you’ll need them. I maxed every link on my third run and it took me 90 hours. Worth it.
Q: Can I beat the game without grinding?
A: Technically yes, but you’ll be underleveled for bosses. The game doesn’t punish you for grinding in the first two dungeons. After that, always grind to +3 levels above the next boss. The XP curve is cruel. I spent an hour on floor 8 of the Bathhouse just killing Mokoi over and over. Boring, but effective.
Q: Why does everyone say to skip the fishing mini-game?
A: Because it’s buggy and the reward (a sword for the protagonist) is outclassed by later gear. The controls on PC are awful. I’ve caught two fish in twenty hours. Not worth the pain.
Q: How do I stop dying to random encounters?
A: Always carry a Persona that resists the dungeon’s main element. If you’re in the Bathhouse, use Orochi for electric. In Striptease, use Take-Minakata. Also, buy Medicine in bulk. 99 of them. You’ll use them all.
Q: What difficulty should I play on?
A: Normal is fine. Hard is for masochists who hate themselves. Very Hard locks you out of changing difficulty and punishes mistakes with double damage. I played on Hard my first time and it took me 50 deaths to get through Yukiko. Stick to Normal unless you’re a vet.
Q: Is the Golden content worth buying?
A: Yes. Extra dungeon, extra social link, extra ending. And you get Chie’s exclusive outfit. That alone is worth the price. But the PC port has some bugs with the UI. Save often.

What players are saying:
Dude, the tip about using Tarunda on Shadow Yukiko saved my ass. I was stuck for six hours and your guide literally walks you through the pattern. Also, the conveyor belt trick for the divine grace card? I missed that on my first run and I'm still mad. Thanks for writing this like a normal person and not some SEO bot.
I disagree on the fishing mini-game. Yeah, it's janky, but the sword you get is actually decent if you beat the Reaper with it early. But whatever, the rest of the guide is solid. The part about the Mysterious Letter quest is absolutely correct—I missed it and it still haunts me. Also, you called Marukyu Striptease by its real name, which is hilarious. Good guide, even if I think you’re wrong about fishing.
I've been playing P4G since 2013 and I still learned something from this. The "Great Elephant" book tip for Understanding? Gold. I never used it. Also, the fact that you specifically said to bring Yosuke's Tarunda from level 9 is the kind of hyper-specific advice that actually helps new players. The boss guide is on point too, especially the part about guarding against Kanji's Power Charge. That move is bullshit. 10/10 guide, I'm sending it to my friend who just started playing.
