Introduction

ARK: Survival Evolved drops you onto a mysterious island with nothing but your wits and a tiny loincloth. Within minutes you are dodging hungry raptors, gathering berries, and trying to figure out why a parachuting dolphin is flying past. With over 80 tamable creatures, a tech ladder that goes from thatch huts to laser-firing Tek armor, and boss arenas that demand perfectly bred dinosaur armies, ARK is one of the most punishing and rewarding survival games ever made. This guide covers the entire journey — from your first dodo kill to the final Overseer fight — so you can spend less time dying and more time thriving.

Taming Strategies

Torpor Management: Every creature has a torpor stat that rises when hit with tranquilizing projectiles and falls over time. Your job is to keep torpor high enough that the creature stays unconscious while keeping its health above zero. Use Tranq Arrows with a Crossbow (unlocks at level 20) for early game, or Tranq Darts with a Longneck Rifle (level 45) for mid-to-late game. Tranq Darts deal 4x the torpor of arrows, making them far more efficient on high-level creatures. A primitive crossbow fires 1.5 arrows per second; a longneck fires once every 2.5 seconds. Plan accordingly.

Narcotics & Kibble: Craft Narcotics from 5 Narcoberries + 1 Spoiled Meat in the Mortar and Pestle. One stack of 100 Narcotics is enough for most mid-tier tames. For food, use Mejoberries for herbivores and Raw Prime Meat for carnivores. The kibble system has been reworked — in the current meta, any creature eats any kibble for the same taming bonus, so use the cheapest kibble you can make (Dodo Egg Kibble) for everything. Raw Prime Meat tames carnivores 2x faster than regular raw meat. For aquatic tames, you will need Prime Fish Meat from coelacanths or sabertooth salmon.

Trap Building: Never try to chase down a tame in the open. Build a trap. The classic "3x3 stone doorframe box with a ramp" works for 90% of creatures. Lure the target up the ramp, jump out, and close the gate behind you. For flyers, use a 4-gate trap: place four Dino Gateways in a square with one gate closed. Lure the pteranodon or argentavis through the open gate, close it, and you have a perfect taming box. For quetzals, you will need a grappling hook and a tapejara — have a friend pilot while you tranq from the passenger seat.

Taming Effectiveness: Every time a creature takes damage during taming, its taming effectiveness drops. Lower effectiveness means fewer bonus levels after taming. Use a primitive crossbow (low damage) instead of a mastercraft one. If using a longneck, load Tranq Darts (they do negligible damage). Never shoot a creature in the head unless you are confident you won't kill it. Headshots deal 3x torpor but also 3x damage. Practice on dodos before you attempt a 150 rex.

Base Locations & Building

Starter Spots (The Island): Herbivore Island in the southeast corner is the safest early-game location. No carnivores spawn naturally. The only danger is the occasional Raptor that swims over. Build a 4x4 thatch hut, a bed, and a storage box. Alternatively, the West Coast beach near the footpaw region gives you access to the central forests and the mountain for metal. Avoid the swamp and the northern snow biome for your first 30 levels.

Building Tiers: Thatch (level 1) is combustible and breaks if a dino breathes on it. Wood (level 15) is better but still vulnerable to raptors and alpha predators. Stone (level 25) is your first real defensive tier — it resists explosions and most dino damage. Metal (level 60) is required for turret foundations and industrial equipment. Tek (requires beating bosses) provides laser walls, force fields, and auto-repair. Rush stone as soon as you have a forge and enough metal for the stone foundation engram. A 6x6 stone base with 2-high walls and a dino gate is the standard PvE endgame base footprint.

Defensive Layering: Surround your base with a outer wall of stone pillars spaced 2 foundations apart — this prevents wild dinos from pathing into your base. Inside, place Plant Species X on elevated platforms. These plant turrets shoot slowing spores at enemies and cost fertilizer to run. Mid-game, add auto-turrets loaded with advanced rifle bullets. Endgame, Tek Turrets with their auto-aim and high damage output are the gold standard. Never build your generator or ammo boxes outside of a 2-wall-thick metal room.

Dino Parking: Build a separate pen for your tames with 2-high stone walls and a large dino gate. Herbivores and carnivores must be separated — a single wandering sabertooth can wipe your entire trike herd overnight. Flyers need their own building with an open roof. Use ramps to let larger dinos (rexes, spino, bronto) walk into their pens. Cryopods and a Cryofridge (level 51) eliminate the need for massive pens — you can store 50 tames in a single fridge.

Resource Farming

Resource Dinos: Never farm resources by hand after level 20. Tame an Ankylosaurus for flint, metal, crystal, and obsidian — its weight reduction on metal is 75%. A Doedicurus gathers stone at 10x the rate of a pick, and its weight for stone is reduced by 75%. For wood, a Therizinosaurus or a mammoth is your best bet. The Therizino can also gather fiber, thatch, berries, and mushrooms, making it the single most versatile farming creature in the game. For thatch specifically, a Megatherium with its insect-eating buff is surprisingly efficient.

Metal Runs: The volcano on The Island has 50+ metal nodes on its slopes and crater. A single run with an Ankylosaurus (2,000+ weight) yields 3,000+ raw metal — enough for 300 ingots after smelting. The mountain tops in the northern snow biome also have abundant metal, but beware of alpha raptors and dire wolves. On Ragnarok, the highlands and the canyon walls are metal-rich. Always fly your Anky out with an Argentavis (which reduces metal weight further) so you can carry more per trip.

Polymer & Oil: Organic Polymer comes from killing Mantises in the desert, Kairuku (penguins) on glaciers, and Hesperornis near rivers. Store organic polymer in a preserving bin or fridge — it spoils in 30 minutes. For hard polymer, you need cementing paste (chitin or keratin + stone) crafted in the Mortar and Pestle or Chem Bench. Tame a Beelzebufo (frog) and hunt dragonflies in the swamp for massive chitin yields. Oil can be harvested from oil veins in the ocean (use an Anky or Dunkleosteus), or from trilobites along the beach. A single oil vein produces 3-5 oil per minute with a Stone Pick.

Element & Endgame Resources: Element comes from boss fights and the rare Element Veins on Extinction and Genesis maps. Late-game crafting requires Polymer (organic or hard), Metal Ingots, Crystal, and Electronics. Tame a Magmasaur on Genesis or Lost Island for passive metal and crystal farming — its saddle acts as a mobile forge. For Obsidian, volcano caves on The Island and the desert on Ragnarok have abundant nodes. Always carry a whip for harvesting berries — it gathers 200+ berries in one swing.

Best Dinosaur Tames by Stage

Early Game (Levels 1-45): Your first tame should be a Parasaur (level 10 saddle). It gathers berries, acts as a pack mule, and its radar ability alerts you to nearby threats. Next, a Raptor (level 15 saddle) — fast, decent damage, and bola-able for easy taming. A Trike (level 20 saddle) gathers berries faster than any other early creature and can defend against carnos. At level 35, craft a Pteranodon saddle and tame a mid-level ptera. Flying changes the game — you can scout, escape, and reach metal-rich mountains safely.

Mid Game (Levels 45-70): Tame an Argentavis (level 45 saddle) as your primary workhorse flyer. Argy has 50% weight reduction on metal, stone, wood, and crystal — it is your mobile smithy. A Baryonyx (level 50 saddle) is the best aquatic combat mount; it can stun-lock sea creatures with its spin attack. An Ankylosaurus and Doedicurus are mandatory at this stage for material income. A Thylacoleo (level 60 saddle) climbs cliffs and pounces on enemies — the best land mount for caves. Never skip the Thyla; its bleed damage shreds high-HP targets.

Late Game (Levels 70-90): Rexes (no saddle — level 55 for platform, 74 for regular) are your boss-fight army. Tame at least 6 high-level rexes (135+ wild) for the Broodmother and Megapithecus fights. A Yutyrannus must be tamed for its courage roar, which increases ally damage by 25% and reduces fear. A Therizinosaurus is both a top-tier farmer and a Dragon-killer — herbivores take reduced fire damage, making Theris the best choice for the Dragon boss fight. Tame a Spinosaurus for its water-hybrid mobility on maps with heavy water.

Endgame (90+ / Tek): Rock Drakes (Aberration) provide cloaking and gliding — irreplaceable on Aberration and useful everywhere. Managarmr (Extinction) is the fastest creature in the game with its ice-breath dive attack. Giganotosaurus is dangerous to tame (its torpor drains incredibly fast) but deals the highest raw melee damage of any creature in ARK. Use Gigas for killing alpha creatures and defending your base — never use them for boss fights, as they cannot be effectively healed or buffed in arenas.

Boss Fight Preparation

Broodmother (Easy/Medium/Hard): Summoned at the Green Obelisk with Megalania Toxin (Easy) or even rarer tribute items. The Broodmother summons waves of spiders and araneos. Bring a team of 18 Megatheriums (20,000+ HP, 400%+ melee, 100% imprint) and a Yutyrannus. Megatheriums gain a "bug killer" buff when fighting insects that doubles their damage. The Broodmother's bite attack applies a torpor-inducing venom — antidote is a stack of Stimulants. Keep the Yuty roar active at all times and whistle "attack target" on the Broodmother. Expected clear time: 3 minutes on Easy, 6 on Hard.

Megapithecus (Easy/Medium/Hard): Summoned at the Blue Obelisk. The arena is a flat colosseum with pillars. The Megapithecus picks up boulders and throws them for massive damage — use the pillars as cover between its throws. It also summons Mesopithecus adds that slow your dinos. Rexes are the meta here: 25,000+ HP, 500%+ melee, with a Yutyrannus behind them for courage roars. One player should ride a Daedon (pig) for passive healing. The Megapithecus slams the ground in phase 2, stunning nearby dinos — pull your rexes back during the wind-up animation.

Dragon (Easy/Medium/Hard): Summoned at the Red Obelisk. The Dragon is the hardest Island boss. Its fire breath deals percentage-based damage that ignores armor, and its landing creates a fire wall. Therizinosauruses are the optimal choice because they are herbivores and take reduced damage from the Dragon's fire. Stats: 25,000+ HP, 600%+ melee, 70+ armor saddle. The Dragon summons Dimorphodons and Pteranodons in its second phase — ignore them and focus the Dragon. Use vegetable cakes in the Therizino's inventory for passive healing. The fire breath ticks for 2-3% max HP per second. Stay mounted and keep moving.

Overseer (Tek Cave): The Overseer is fought inside the Tek Cave at the volcano's peak. The cave itself is a gauntlet of level 300+ dinos and turrets that drains resources before the fight. Bring 20 rexes (30,000+ HP, 600%+ melee), 1 Yuty, 1 Daedon, and plenty of ammo. The Overseer fight has three phases: P1 is a floating alien head that spawns defense units, P2 it transforms into a giant monkey, and P3 it becomes a dragon. Its laser attack is instant-kill — hide behind the central pillar. After defeat, you unlock Tekgrams and the ability to ascend. Required wait time before attempting: 30+ hours of character development.

Advanced Survival Tips

  • Explorer Notes: Collect all Explorer Notes on the map for a permanent 2x XP boost. They are glowing golden notebooks scattered across every biome. Use a fast flyer (Pteranodon or Griffin on Ragnarok) and follow a collected-note map from the wiki. Each note gives 10 seconds of 5x XP when read, plus permanent stacking bonuses.
  • Imprinting: Raise baby dinos yourself for the imprinting bonus. At 100% imprint, your dino gets 30% bonus damage and 30% damage resistance when ridden. Imprint by feeding, cuddling, or walking the baby every 3-4 hours. For boss-fight dinos, 100% imprint is non-negotiable on higher difficulties.
  • Cryopods & Fridges: Unlock Cryopods at level 51. They store any tame smaller than a Titanosaur in a handheld sphere. A Cryofridge holds 50 pods and keeps them charged. Carry 10+ pods with your best tames at all times. When exploring new areas, deploy only what you need. Cryopodded dinos lose their "wandering" state and will not engage enemies without your command.
  • Tek Tier Priority: After your first boss kill, unlock Tek Chestpiece first (flight). Then Tek Leggings (super-speed sprint). Then Tek Rifle (high-damage laser). Tek Armor requires Element to charge — each piece burns 1 Element per 5 minutes of use. Build a Tek Generator for your base before crafting personal Tek armor.
  • Server Settings: If you control the server, set Taming Speed to 3x, Harvesting Rate to 2.5x, and Difficulty to 1.0 (max wild level 150). Boost Player Harvesting Damage to 2x so your tools feel effective. Single-player settings in the options menu apply these buffs automatically and are well-balanced for solo play.
Pro Tip: Before you attempt any boss fight, do a dry run of the tribute requirements and arena entry without your good gear. Several bosses require specific tribute items that are easy to forget — the Broodmother needs Megalania Toxin (from the swamp cave), the Dragon needs Artifact of the Devourer (from the Carnivorous Caverns), and the Megapithecus needs Artifact of the Skylord (from the Ice Cave in the northeast). Showing up without these means a humiliating trip back. Build a separate dedicated storage box labeled "Boss Tributes" and stock it as you explore caves.
