Introduction

Grounded takes the survival genre and shrinks it — literally. You play as a teenager shrunk to the size of an ant, trapped in a suburban backyard that is now a lethal jungle. Spiders loom as tall as buildings, a single drop of dew is a drinking fountain, and a hungry ladybug is a walking tank. Underneath the charming Honey I Shrunk the Kids aesthetic is a full-fledged survival RPG with tiered armor, weapon upgrades, mutation builds, and genuinely challenging boss fights. This guide covers base location strategy, the optimal gear progression path through all three tiers, and how to tackle every major boss on your way to finishing the story and escaping the yard.

Best Base Locations

Your base location in Grounded determines almost everything about your playthrough — resource access, safety from bugs, and navigation efficiency. Here are the top spots ranked by utility:

1. The Oak Tree Lab (Central, Safe, Water Access): The pond at the base of the oak tree is the single best beginner base location. Build on the flat grass near the Mysterious Machine for central map access. The oak tree area has abundant Weevil spawns (easy food), nearby Sap drops from the tree itself, and the Oak Lab is your primary story hub for the first half of the game. Build a "sky bridge" from the grass blades up to the oak tree branches for a safe, bug-proof pathway connecting the upper yard later.

2. The Baseball (Best New Player Location): Directly northwest of the Mysterious Machine. The flat surface of the baseball is completely bug-proof — nothing can path onto it except flying insects. Early game, this means zero base defense threats. Build a ladder using Grass Planks and Stem Scaffolding to reach the top. The downside is limited ground-level resource access. You'll need ziplines to reach other areas by mid-game.

3. The Juice Box Near the Hedge: Located southeast of the oak tree, bordering the Hedge biome. The flat top of the juice box is unpathable by ground insects. This is the ideal forward-operating base for Hedge lab progression. A short zipline from the oak tree area to this juice box cuts travel time by 70%. The nearby Flooded Zone provides abundant Tadpole meat (easy protein) and Water Fleas (diving gear crafting).

4. The Sandbox Edge (Late Game): The fence line bordering the Sandbox is the best late-game base location. Build on top of the fence posts themselves — Antlions (the Sandbox's primary threat) cannot climb them. This gives you direct access to the Sandbox (for antlion parts, tier 2-3 gear, and the Sandbox lab), the Picnic Table (for Cookieland chips and science), and the Shed Surroundings (for late-game resources). Build a zipline tower here connecting back to the oak tree hub.

Base Building Tips: Always build on elevated terrain or structures — ground bases get raided by Orb Weaver spiders, Wolf Spiders, and Bombardier Beetles unpredictably. Build a Dew Collector (2 Grub Hide + 4 Flower Petals) on your roof for passive water. Set up a Trapt. (4 Web Fiber + 2 Sprig) near water for infinite insect protein. Build your first Research Station (1 Quartzite + 5 Raw Science) inside your base to analyze all new resources on the spot.

Armor Tiers & Gear Progression

Grounded has three armor tiers, and each tier has multiple sets optimized for different playstyles. Upgrading to the next tier is not optional — it's necessary to survive the damage scaling of later biomes.

Tier 1 — Early Game (First 5 Hours): Clover Armor (6 Clover Leaves + 3 Plant Fiber) is your free, zero-effort starter set. It provides minimal defense but lets you craft the set bonus "Damp" (reduces thirst drain). Better early option: Acorn Armor (6 Acorn Bits + 6 Mite Fuzz + 3 Web Fiber). Acorn Armor gives +4 defense per piece and the "Hard" set bonus (30% chance to resist staggers). Grind for Acorn Bits by smashing acorn shells against the oak tree roots with a Pebblet Axe. Mite Fuzz drops from Mites — the tiny bugs found near the oak tree's base.

Tier 2 — Mid Game (Hours 5-20): Aphid Armor (7 Aphid Husks + 4 Berry Leather + 4 Silk Rope) gives the "Nimble" set bonus (increased sprint speed). Best for general exploration. Ladybug Armor (5 Ladybug Parts + 5 Berry Leather + 4 Silk Rope) is the best defensive option — "Comfy" set bonus gives +50% blocking stamina and 33% passive health regen. Craft Ladybug Armor before attempting the Hedge lab or the Haze lab. You simply need the defense. Antlion Armor (5 Antlion Parts + 5 Pupa Leather + 4 Silk Rope) reduces sizzle damage in the Sandbox. Required for the Sandbox lab and upper yard access.

Tier 3 — Late Game (Hours 20+): Roly Poly Armor (5 Roly Poly Shell + 7 Pupa Leather + 4 Silk Rope) provides the best physical defense in the game. "Mammoth" set bonus prevents ALL stagger from enemy attacks. You will face-tank Wolf Spiders with this set. Broodmother Armor (7 Broodmother Chunks + 7 Pupa Leather + 5 Silk Rope) — crafted from Broodmother boss drops. "Poison Guard" makes you immune to poison and gives +25% poison damage on your attacks. Best set for the upper yard. Fire Ant Armor (5 Fire Ant Parts + 7 Pupa Leather + 4 Silk Rope) gives corrosion damage on attack and is the best DPS set for endgame bosses.

Weapon Upgrades & Mutations

Weapon Tiers: Each weapon can be upgraded to level 9 using Quartzite (Tier 1: Brittle, Tier 2: Sturdy, Tier 3: Supreme). Each upgrade level adds +10% damage. Level 6-9 upgrades unlock "Mighty" (pure damage), "Sour" (extra damage against robots and boss enemies), "Spicy" (damage over time), "Fresh" (slowing), or "Salty" (bonus against water creatures) affinities. The general rule: Mighty is best for general-purpose weapons, Sour is best for bossing.

Best Weapons by Category:

  • Axes: The Termite Axe (10 Termite Parts + 4 Supreme Quartzite + 3 Pupa Leather) is the best standard melee weapon — high damage (7/10 on the in-game scale), fast swing speed, and the "Corrosion" debuff reduces enemy defense by 25% over 3 hits. Use Mighty or Sour affinity.
  • Clubs: The Club of the Mother Demon (5 Broodmother Fang + 5 Broodmother Chunks + 3 Supreme Quartzite) is the highest single-hit melee damage weapon. Slow windup but hits for 11/10 damage. The stun chance stops most enemies from attacking. Best with Spicy affinity for the burning DoT.
  • Swords: The Mosquito Needle (2 Mosquito Beak + 3 Supreme Quartzite) has lifesteal — every hit heals 2% of max HP. For sustain-heavy fights (Infected Broodmother, Mantis), this is the best weapon. Use Fresh affinity for the slow effect.
  • Ranged: The Crossbow (4 Ladybug Parts + 4 Silk Rope + 3 Berry Leather) is accessible mid-game and usable through endgame. Pair with Gas Arrows (Gas Sack + Splinter) for area denial against swarms. The Black Ox Crossbow (3 Black Ox Horn + 3 Supreme Quartzite + 3 Pupa Leather) is the late-game upgrade — 40% more damage and 50% faster reload.

Essential Mutations: Mutations are passive perks unlocked by killing specific creatures or performing certain actions. You can equip 3 at first (increase to 5 by collecting MIX.R chips and completing the "Mixin" challenges). Must-have mutations: Meat Shield (kill 50 Gnats — +25 max HP); Coup de Grass (random crits — kill ants and find the mutation chip in the Haze lab); Cardio Fan (sprint efficiency — run 10,000 centimeters); Parry Master (perfect block stamina reduction — perfect-block 50 attacks). For boss fights, equip Buff Lungs (swim and hold breath longer — find in the pond lab), or Blademaster (sword stamina reduction — kill 50 enemies with swords).

Key Bugs & Farming Routes

Efficient bug farming is how you progress through Grounded without wasting hours wandering. Here are the optimized routes for every key resource:

Weevils (Early Food): Spawn around the oak tree base and the Mysterious Machine at dawn and dusk. Kill 10 for uncooked Weevil Meat, 2 Grub Hide (for the Dew Collector), and early XP. Best route: circle the oak tree clockwise at 6:00 AM in-game time.

Orb Weaver Spiders (Silk Rope): Spawn at three fixed locations: the web tunnel under the oak tree, the flower bed east of the oak tree, and the flooded zone hedge line. Orb Weavers drop 3-5 Web Fiber each. Silk Rope (2 Web Fiber) is required for almost every Tier 2+ recipe. Farm the oak tree tunnel first (3 Orb Weavers), then loop through the flower bed (1-2), then the hedge (2-3). Respawn timer is 3 in-game days.

Ladybugs (Tier 2 Armor): Three fixed spawns: near the Mysterious Machine, in the grass field next to the oak tree, and near the juice box by the hedge. Ladybugs have a charge attack — sidestep and hit them from behind. They drop 2-3 Ladybug Parts, which are required for Ladybug Armor. Farm all three locations, wait 2 days, repeat.

Black Ox Beetles (Tier 3 Weapons): Found exclusively in the upper yard. Four spawn locations: the wood pile near the shed, the area below the picnic table, the pasture near the field station, and the termite mound area. Black Ox Beetles have a charging attack (blockable) and a ground pound (jump to avoid). The Black Ox Horn is the bottleneck for the Black Ox Crossbow and upgraded Tier 3 tools. Farm all four, wait 4 days, repeat.

Fire Ants (Fire Ant Parts): The upper yard near the shed and the charcoal bag area. Fire Ants attack in groups of 5-8 and deal burning damage. Use a Sour weapon (antlions in the Sandbox also drop parts for Sour), or use Fresh weapon to counter the burn. Bring a Gas Arrow or two for the swarm. Fire Ant Mandibles are needed for the Fire Ant Armor set.

Boss Strategies

Grounded has 4 major bosses. Each requires specific preparation. Here is the exact loadout and strategy for each:

Broodmother (Hedge Lab): Summoned by inserting a Broodmother BLT (1 Thistle Needle + 1 Bombardier Part + 1 Spider Venom) into the hedge lab's boss statue. Health: 1,500 HP. Weak to Spicy damage. Recommended: Ladybug Armor, Red Ant Club (Tier 2), 3+ bandages, 10+ cooked Weevil Meat. Strategy: The Broodmother spawns spiderlings periodically. Ignore them and focus DPS on the main body. When she rears up, she is about to do a poison spray — run directly sideways. When she climbs the ceiling, sprint to the other side of the arena — the web ball she drops does massive damage. Use the orbs in the boss arena to block her charge attack. Kill spiderlings with a single pebblet swing in between main boss attacks.

Assistant Manager (Haze Lab / Black Anthill): A robot boss in the Black Anthill, requiring level 3 door access. Health: 2,000 HP. Weak to Sour damage. Recommended: Ladybug Armor, any Tier 2 weapon with Sour gem, Gas Mask (mandatory — the arena room fills with Haze gas). Strategy: The Assistant Manager has three attacks — a laser sweep (duck under it), a shockwave (jump over it), and a summon phase where it spawns 2 robot soldiers (kill them immediately with a Sour weapon — they are the real threat). The boss fight is actually a resource management fight: your Gas Mask has limited filtration before needing a replacement filter. Bring 3+ spare filters. The reward is the Hedge Key, required to open the upper yard gate.

Mantis (Upper Yard / Picnic Table): Summoned by placing a Mantis Statue on the picnic table and feeding it the Mantis Kebab (2 Bee Fuzz + 1 Fire Ant Egg + 1 Fungal Growth + 1 Ladybug Part). Health: 3,500 HP. Weak to Fresh damage. Recommended: Roly Poly Armor, Mosquito Needle (Fresh), 10+ smoothies (Human Food or Beefy Slurry), max tier healing items. Strategy: This is the hardest non-secret boss. The Mantis has a 7-hit combo that can one-shot a non-blocking player. Learn the pattern: two horizontal slashes (block), one overhead slam (sidestep), three rapid slashes (block), ground pound (jump). Between combos, she summons Mantis Nymphs — three of them, each with 150 HP. Hit them with a gas arrow or area attack, then resume DPS on the main boss. The Mantis drops the Mantis Claw, which crafts the highest-damage fist weapon in the game.

Infected Broodmother (Secret Boss — Upper Yard): Found in the Infected Fungal area beneath the shed. Summoned by placing 3 Infected Broodmother Parts on the fungal growth in her lair. Health: 5,000 HP. Immunity: Poison. Weak to Sour and Spicy. Recommended: Fire Ant Armor (corrosion set bonus), Club of the Mother Demon (Sour), 15+ healing smoothies, 5+ bandages, 3+ gas mask filters, the "Truffle Tussle" mutation (increased fungus damage). Strategy: The hardest fight in the game. The Infected Broodmother has ALL normal attacks plus explosive fungal bursts — orange spores appear on the ground 2 seconds before they explode. Do not stand still. The fight has three phases: Phase 1 (100%-60% HP) — normal Broodmother attacks plus occasional spore drops; Phase 2 (60%-25%) — constant spore generation, speed increased by 30%; Phase 3 (25%-0%) — enrage: spawns 4 infected spiderlings every 30 seconds, continuous spore coverage, boss moves 50% faster. Kill her and you unlock the infected broodmother armor set — the highest tier armor in the game.

Story Completion Path

The story in Grounded unfolds through a series of lab explorations that reveal the truth about Dr. Wendell Tully's SPAC.R experiment and how to reverse it. Here is the optimal order:

Step 1 — Mysterious Machine + Oak Lab: Activate the Mysterious Machine (you need 3 Quartzite to repair it). This opens the Oak Lab door. Inside, you find BURG.L — the robot vendor. Buy the "Hedge Lab" location data-chip from him (2,500 Raw Science). This is the only mandatory purchase. Ignore the base building recipes for now.

Step 2 — Hedge Lab: Located in the hedge biome southeast of the oak tree. The lab entrance is inside a hollow log. Inside, you learn about Tully's initial experiments and the first steps to finding a cure. The lab also contains the Hedge Key — required for the picnic table area. Complete the Hedge Lab's primary objective (analyze the three tissue samples) and collect the Super Chip. Return it to BURG.L.

Step 3 — Haze Lab + Pond Lab: Do these in either order. The Haze Lab (in the southwest haze zone, requires Gas Mask) unlocks the Assistant Manager boss and the upper yard gate. The Pond Lab (underwater in the koi pond, requires Diving Gear) reveals the full backstory of the SPAC.R device and unlocks the sunken treasure cache. Both labs drop Super Chips for BURG.L.

Step 4 — Black Anthill + Upper Yard Access: The Black Anthill (northwest of the oak tree) contains the Assistant Manager boss. Beat him, get the Hedge Key, and unlock the upper yard gate near the picnic table. The upper yard contains every remaining resource, bug, and lab you need.

Step 5 — The Shed Lab + Ending: The final lab is inside the garden shed in the northwest corner of the upper yard. The entrance is through the cracked shed wall, accessible via a series of jumps from the toolbox. Inside, you find the final Tully recording and the SPAC.R reversal device. To activate it, you need to defend three SPAC.R nodes from waves of infected bugs for 5 minutes each (similar to the MIX.R tower defense events). The final wave includes 2 infected Wolf Spiders simultaneously. This is the last combat challenge in the game. Survive all three node defenses to trigger the ending cutscene. You escape the yard — but not without a twist that sets up a potential sequel.

Pro Tip: Before fighting any boss, build a "Boss Prep Station" near the boss arena. This should include: 1 Lean-To (set spawn point), 1 Roasting Spit (cook food), 1 Workbench (repair weapons), and 1 Storage Chest with backup weapons and heals. Dying to the Mantis after a 15-minute fight and having to run from the oak tree base all the way back ruins the pacing. Place the prep station within 30 seconds of the boss trigger. For the Infected Broodmother specifically, build your prep station outside the fungal cave entrance — there is a flat rock about 20 meters from the entrance that is safe from bugs and has direct line of sight to the cave.
